Youth Forum selects from the Hiscox collection

Considering the ways in which lockdown has affected experiences of art and culture, Whitechapel Gallery’s youth collective, Duchamp & Sons, presents a virtually curated display featuring artworks drawn from the Hiscox Collection.

Confined to their homes and communicating virtually, they asked ‘How do we imagine a space where we have spent so much time over the past months? What does it mean to curate an exhibition from our kitchens and bedrooms, with our laptops and screens?’

The shared experience of lockdown generated the themes for their curated display of work drawn from the Hiscox collection. Their chosen artworks either transport us to faraway destinations or compel us to look closer to home. Skyscapes and islands predominate with works such as Trevor Paglen’s CLOUDS (2018) revealing the pixel formulas required to image the sky, Lisa Oppenheim’s calendar of clouds, or Peter Doig’s radiant oarsman silhouetted against ‘Canoe Island’. A second gallery leads us back home with Gregory Crewdson’s cinematic view of small town goings on at twilight or Richard Billingham’s startlingly candid portraits of his family.

Through these galleries we can also hear the voices of the young curators sharing their thoughts on each work of art; their writings are also available online.

Artists featured in the exhibition are Richard Billingham, Edward Burtynsky, Gregory Crewdson, Peter Doig, Barbara Kasten, Agnieszka Kurant, Langlands and Bell, Lisa Oppenheim, Trevor Paglen and Cornelia Parker.
