Whitechapel Gallery Virtual Studio Visits

April - May 2021

A programme curated and hosted by Whitechapel Gallery’s youth collective, Duchamp & Sons, inviting artists across the globe to share their creative workspaces and practices namely Tobi Alexandra Falade, Nabihah Iqbal, Lucy Orta, Rory Pilgrim. Each visit is framed around a specific theme of interest to the group such as community, sustainability and the environment, music, wellbeing, identity and representation.

Process

I devised a four-month programme from January to April 2021 to give Duchamp & Sons the skills to lead the visits. To support the facilitation and delivery of sessions, I created the Duchamp & Sons Ambassadors and Peer Facilitators paid initiative for four older and established members to co-plan and co-lead the sessions with me, gaining training in project management, delivery and evaluation. Sessions were led by me where unnamed or by invited guests. These included:

  • identifying personal interests and collective themes

  • artists research and selection process

  • artists interview workshop with Precious Adesina, Telegraph journalist and former D&S member

  • hosting artists workshop with Jane Scarth, Whitechapel Gallery’s Public Programme Curator

  • pre-meetings with selected artists

  • devising event: questions, identifying hosts, event structures, audience engagement

  • event and programme evaluation
