Whitechapel Gallery Youth - led Open Call

Sep 2017 - Jan 2018

I devised a four-month programme for Duchamp & Sons to gain insight into an open-call process and to select a socially-engaged artist for their four-month residency. The selected artist would collaborate with the group on their chosen theme to realize a new work for an exhibition in the Project Galleries coinciding with The London Open 2018, Whitechapel Gallery’s triennial open call which showcases some of the most dynamic art being made across the capital. Sessions included below, those unnamed were delivered by me.

  • Workshops to propose individual and collective themes

  • Selecting open call theme of "Transitions and Turnings”

  • Visit to PEER Gallery with Ruth Waters, exhibiting artist and Acme/Goldsmiths MFA Studio Awardee

  • Visit to Acme Studios to meet graduate artists-in-residence from Goldsmiths, Slade and Kingston and learn about the residency programme and making work in London post graduation, artist studios, and emergent practices.

  • Writing and reading artists statements with Julia Calver, artist and writer

  • Designing open call brand identity

  • Creating a selection criteria with Jane Scarth, WG Curator: Public Programme

  • Plan and launch 3-week open call

  • Selection process: reading and scoring 53 artists proposals, group feedback and shortlisting to four artists with Renee Odjidja and Dr. Carolina Silva

  • Artist presentations and interviews with Duchamp & Sons

  • Final selection process with Renee Odjidja, Dr. Carolina Silva and Dr. Mercedes Vicente.

  • Selected artist announcement

Read about the programme and resulting collaboration with artist Seth Pimlott on the Duchamp & Sons blog. The project culminated with the exhibition Alone Together in 2018.
